なぜやるか

この50語は英文の「骨格」です。the, I, in, for… 地味ですが、TOEICの全200問に登場します。多くの方が「知っている」と思っている語ですが、実は使い分けがあいまいなまま放置されていることが多いです。特に前置詞（in / on / at / by 等）はPart 5で直接問われます。

このLesson 1を終えると、前置詞の使い分けが整理でき、Part 5の前置詞問題で根拠を持って選べるようになります。

やり方

1. まず単語リストをざっと眺めて、知らない語がないか確認しましょう
2. 全部知っていれば、すぐ「紛らわしいペア解説」に進んでOKです
3. 解説を読んだら、確認テストで理解度をチェックしましょう

単語リスト

紛らわしいペア解説

ここがこのレッスンの核心です。「知っている」つもりの前置詞ほど、いざPart 5で出題されると迷います。それぞれのコアイメージを押さえて、根拠を持って選べるようになりましょう。

① in / on / at（場所と時間の使い分け）

これはTOEIC Part 5の定番中の定番です。コアイメージで整理しましょう。

場所のイメージ
– in → 空間の「中」にいる：in the office（オフィスの中に）/ in the building（建物の中に）
– on → 表面に「接触」している：on the desk（机の上に）/ on the second floor（2階に）
– at → ある「地点」を指す：at the entrance（入口で）/ at the station（駅で）

時間のイメージ
– in → 月・年・季節など「幅のある期間」：in March / in 2025 / in the morning
– on → 曜日・日付など「特定の1日」：on Monday / on April 5 / on the first day
– at → 時刻など「ピンポイントの一点」：at 3 p.m. / at noon / at the moment

例文
– The quarterly report must be submitted in January.
（四半期レポートは1月中に提出しなければなりません。）
– The training session is scheduled on Wednesday.
（研修は水曜日に予定されています。）
– All participants should arrive at the venue at 9 a.m.
（参加者全員、午前9時に会場に到着してください。）

Part 5での出方: 空欄の直後が「月・年」なら in、「曜日・日付」なら on、「時刻」なら at。この判断基準だけで正解できる問題が毎回出ます。

② by の3つの意味

by は1語で3つの意味を持つため、文脈で判断する力が必要です。

• 手段・動作主（〜によって）→ by e-mail / reviewed by the manager / by train
• 場所（〜のそばに）→ by the window / by the entrance
• 期限（〜までに）→ by Friday / by the end of the month

例文
– The proposal was approved by the director.
（その提案は部長によって承認されました。）
– Please submit the revised budget by March 31.
（修正した予算を3月31日までに提出してください。）
– Ms. Tanaka was waiting by the reception desk.
（田中さんが受付のそばで待っていました。）

Part 5での出方: 「〜までに」の by は until（〜までずっと）との使い分けで問われることがあります。by は「期限」、until は「継続」と覚えておきましょう。

③ between と among

• between → 2つの間：between the two departments（2つの部署の間で）
• among → 3つ以上の間：among the applicants（応募者たちの間で）

例文
– The agreement was signed between the two companies.
（その合意書は2社の間で締結されました。）
– Among all the proposals, Mr. Ito’s plan received the highest rating.
（すべての提案の中で、伊藤さんの案が最も高い評価を受けました。）

Part 5での出方: 空欄の後に “the two …” があれば between、”the + 複数名詞” や “all the …” があれば among、と機械的に判断できます。

④ through と across

• through → 空間や過程を「通り抜ける」：through the tunnel / through the hiring process
• across → 平面や範囲を「横切る」：across the street / across the country

例文
– Employees must go through a security check before entering the laboratory.
（従業員は研究室に入る前にセキュリティチェックを通過しなければなりません。）
– The new policy will be implemented across all regional offices.
（新しい方針は全地域オフィスにわたって導入されます。）

Part 5での出方: 「プロセスを経て」なら through、「範囲全体に」なら across。TOEICでは “across the organization”（組織全体で）という表現が頻出です。

⑤ into と in

• into → 外から中への「移動」：walked into the room（部屋の中へ歩いて入った）
• in → 中に「いる」状態：is in the room（部屋の中にいる）

例文
– The CEO walked into the conference room at exactly 10 a.m.
（CEOはちょうど午前10時に会議室に入りました。）
– All the financial records are in the cabinet next to my desk.
（財務記録はすべて私の机の横のキャビネットの中にあります。）

Part 5での出方: 動詞が「移動」を表すなら into、「状態」を表すなら in。put / place / walk / move などの動詞の後は into が来やすいです。

⑥ over と under

• over → 真上を越える / 数量が超える：over the bridge / over 100 people
• under → 真下 / 進行中・管理下：under the table / under construction / under review

例文
– Over 200 employees attended the annual company picnic.
（200人を超える従業員が年次社内ピクニックに参加しました。）
– The building is currently under renovation and will reopen in June.
（そのビルは現在改装中で、6月に再オープンします。）

Part 5での出方: “under + 名詞” で「〜中」を表す表現（under construction / under review / under discussion）はTOEIC頻出です。丸ごとセットで覚えておきましょう。

例文で確認

紛らわしいペアの使い分けが実感できる10文です。前置詞に注目しながら読んでみましょう。

1. The workshop will be held in the main hall on September 12 at 2 p.m.
→ ワークショップは9月12日午後2時にメインホールで開催されます。

2. Please send the signed contract to us by e-mail by the end of the week.
→ 署名済みの契約書を今週末までにメールでお送りください。

3. The manager walked into the meeting room and sat down by the window.
→ マネージャーは会議室に入り、窓のそばに座りました。

4. The proposal was discussed among the five department heads during the retreat.
→ その提案は合宿の間に5人の部長の間で話し合われました。

5. Visitors must pass through the security gate before entering the building.
→ 来訪者はビルに入る前にセキュリティゲートを通過しなければなりません。

6. The new regulation applies across all branches, not just between the two main offices.
→ 新規則は2つの本社間だけでなく、全支店にわたって適用されます。

7. She placed the documents on the desk and put the extra copies in the drawer.
→ 彼女は書類を机の上に置き、予備のコピーを引き出しの中に入れました。

8. Over 50 clients attended the product launch, which was held under tight security.
→ 50人を超える顧客が、厳重なセキュリティのもとで開催された製品発表会に出席しました。

9. He introduced himself to the team and shared his vision for the project.
→ 彼はチームに自己紹介をし、プロジェクトに対する彼のビジョンを共有しました。

10. The factory is located along the river, just across the bridge from the station.
→ その工場は川に沿って位置しており、駅から橋を渡ったところにあります。

Q1: A
時刻には at、曜日には on を使います。「3 p.m.」は時刻の一点なので at、「Monday」は曜日なので on です。

Q2: B
「〜によってレビューされた」は受動態の動作主を示す by です。reviewed by the manager は Part 5 頻出パターンです。

Q3: C
「全部門にわたって適用される」は範囲全体を表す across です。across all departments は TOEIC 定番表現です。

Q4: D
walked は移動の動詞なので、外から中へ入る into が正解です。in だと「中にいる状態」になり、walked と合いません。

Q5: C
「2社の間で」は between です。”the two companies” と2つが明示されているのがヒントです。

Q6: D
「〜までに提出」は期限を表す by です。until は「〜までずっと（継続）」なので、提出という一回の動作には合いません。

Q7: C
under review（審査中）は丸ごと覚えるべき TOEIC 頻出表現です。under + 名詞で「〜中」を表します。

Q8: D
「研修プログラムを経る」はプロセスを通り抜ける through です。go through a program は定番の組み合わせです。

Q9: A
「応募した候補者たちの中で」は3人以上の間を表す among です。candidates が複数形であることがヒントです。

Q10: B
「10月に」は月なので in、「ホテルで」は場所の一点なので at です。in October / at the Grand Hotel となります。
