なぜやるか

TOEICの Part 5 では、前置詞と接続詞の使い分けを問う問題がほぼ毎回出題されます。判断のカギは「空欄の後に名詞句が来ていれば前置詞、主語＋動詞（SV）が来ていれば接続詞」というシンプルなルールです。この追加Lesson 2を終えると、TOEIC頻出の前置詞46語を一気に整理でき、Part 5 の前置詞問題を迷わず解けるようになります。

やり方

1. まず一覧表をざっと眺めて、意味が出てこない語にチェックを入れましょう
2. チェックした語を中心に、英語→意味を声に出して3〜5回繰り返しましょう
3. グループ解説を読んだら、確認テストで定着度をチェックしましょう

前置詞一覧（46語）

接続詞用法「有」の語に注意: after, as, before, since, unless, until の6語は、後ろに名詞句が来れば前置詞、SVが来れば接続詞として働きます。Part 5 では「空欄の後ろを見る」だけで正解が決まります。

TOEICでの出方＋グループ解説

① 時の前置詞（before, after, during, since, until, prior to, by）

「いつ」を表す前置詞グループです。during と for の違い（during + 特定の期間名、for + 数値の期間）も Part 5 の定番です。

Prior to the merger, both companies conducted a thorough financial review.
（合併の前に、両社は徹底的な財務レビューを行った。）

 

All applications must be submitted by the end of this month.
（すべての申請書は今月末までに提出しなければならない。）

② 場所の前置詞（at, in, on, above, under, inside, near, between, among, opposite）

「どこ」を表す前置詞グループです。at は地点、in は空間の内部、on は接触面を表すのが基本イメージです。between は2つの間、among は3つ以上の間で使い分けます。

The new branch is located between the train station and the shopping center.
（新しい支店は駅とショッピングセンターの間にある。）

 

Safety equipment must be stored inside the designated cabinet.
（安全用具は指定のキャビネットの内側に保管しなければならない。）

③ 原因・理由の前置詞（because of, due to, owing to, thanks to, in light of）

「なぜ」を表す前置詞グループです。Part 5 では because（接続詞）と because of（前置詞）の使い分けが特に頻出します。空欄の後が名詞句なら because of / due to / owing to、SVなら because / since を選びましょう。

The outdoor event was canceled due to severe weather conditions.
（屋外イベントは悪天候のために中止された。）

 

Thanks to the marketing team’s effort, quarterly sales exceeded the target.
（マーケティングチームの努力のおかげで、四半期の売上は目標を超えた。）

④ 譲歩の前置詞（despite, in spite of, regardless of）

「〜にもかかわらず」を表すグループです。Part 5 では although / even though（接続詞）と despite / in spite of（前置詞）の使い分けが頻出します。空欄の後が名詞句なら despite / in spite of、SVなら although を選びましょう。

Despite the tight deadline, the team delivered the project on time.
（厳しい締め切りにもかかわらず、チームはプロジェクトを期日通りに納品した。）

 

Regardless of the weather, the conference will be held as scheduled.
（天候にかかわらず、カンファレンスは予定通り開催される。）

⑤ その他の頻出前置詞（according to, in addition to, such as, rather than, apart from, except, in regard to, in case of）

上の4グループに入らないものの、TOEICで非常によく出る前置詞です。特に according to（〜によると）は Part 7 の本文に頻出し、in addition to（〜に加えて）は Part 5 の語彙問題でよく問われます。

According to the latest survey, employee satisfaction has improved significantly.
（最新の調査によると、従業員満足度は大幅に改善した。）

 

In addition to the base salary, the position offers a performance bonus.
（基本給に加えて、そのポジションには業績ボーナスがある。）

前置詞が実際にどう使われるか、10文で確認しましょう。太字が前置詞です。

9. All deliveries must pass through the security checkpoint at the loading dock.
   「すべての配送品は荷積み場のセキュリティチェックポイントを通って通過しなければならない。」

10. In case of a fire emergency, please use the stairway instead of the elevator.
