NOT問題とは何か

TOEIC Part 7の設問には「正しいことを選ぶ問題」と「正しくないことを選ぶ問題(NOT問題)」の2種類があります。

NOT問題の設問パターン:

What is NOT mentioned about the product?
Which of the following is NOT stated in the article?
According to the email, what is NOT included in the package?

なぜNOT問題が難しいか:

通常の問題は「本文中の1箇所」と「正解の選択肢」が一致すれば解けますが、NOT問題は4つの選択肢すべてを本文と照合しなければなりません。本文に書かれていた内容3つ(=不正解)を見抜き、書かれていなかった内容1つ(=正解)を選ぶ必要があります。


NOT問題の解法ステップ

Step 1:設問の種類を確認する
「NOT」「EXCEPT」の語に注目。見落とすと全て逆の答えを選んでしまいます。

Step 2:選択肢を先に読む
4つの選択肢のキーワードを確認し、本文のどこを読むべかを予測します。

Step 3:本文と選択肢を1つずつ照合する
「本文に書いてある → 不正解に×印」、「本文に書いていない → 正解候補に○印」

Step 4:消去法で正解を絞り込む
3つを×にできれば、残り1つが正解。


TRUE/FALSE問題の特徴

TOEIC本試験では厳密な「TRUE/FALSE」形式(○×形式)は出ませんが、以下のような事実確認問題が同じ解法を必要とします:

What is indicated about Mr. Johnson?
What is suggested about the new policy?
According to the notice, what will happen on Friday?

これらは本文と選択肢の内容が一致するかを確認する問題です。NOT問題と同じ「照合思考」が必要です。


NOT問題の誤答パターン

誤答パターン具体例
半正解の落とし穴本文に「10% discount」とあるのに、選択肢が「15% discount」→ 数字が違うのに気づかず正解にしてしまう

NOT問題を解くための3原則

原則1:「NOT」「EXCEPT」を見落とすな
設問を読む際に必ずNOTの有無を確認する。NOT問題と通常問題は解法が逆。

原則2:消去法を使う
3つの選択肢に本文の根拠を見つけて×印をつける。残った1つが正解。全部一致するまで本文を読まない。

原則3:「言及なし」を「否定」と混同しない
本文に書かれていないことと、本文で否定されていることは別物です。「not required」は「記載なし」ではなく「否定の事実として記載あり」です。
