To: All Marketing Department Staff
From: Daniela Vance, Office Coordinator
Date: March 14
Subject: Temporary Relocation of Workstations

Dear colleagues,

As many of you are aware, the renovation of our third-floor offices is scheduled to begin on Monday, March 24. To minimize disruption to your daily work, the Facilities team will be moving all marketing staff to the fifth floor for the duration of the project, which is expected to last approximately six weeks.

Please clear your desks completely by 5:00 P.M. on Friday, March 21. Boxes for packing personal items and documents will be delivered to your current floor on Wednesday, March 19. Label each box clearly with your name and your new fifth-floor desk number, which you can find on the seating chart posted outside the break room. Do not pack your computer or monitor; the IT department will handle the transfer and reconnection of all electronic equipment over the weekend.

If you require any special accommodations during the move, or if you anticipate being out of the office during the relocation period, please contact me directly at extension 4471 no later than March 18 so that arrangements can be made on your behalf.

Thank you for your cooperation.

Hi Priya, the client just called. They moved the product demo from Thursday to Wednesday at 2 P.M. Can we still be ready?

Marcus Hill (10:07 A.M.)
Hmm. Could you test them first thing Wednesday morning instead?

Marlowe Tower Office Park — Parking Reassignment Notice

To all tenants of Buildings C and D:

Beginning Monday, March 9, the underground parking structure beneath Building C will be closed for resurfacing. This work is expected to take approximately three weeks. During this period, all employees who normally use the Building C garage must park in the East Surface Lot, located across Renwick Avenue.

To enter the East Surface Lot, you will need a temporary access card. These cards are different from your regular garage badges and will not be issued automatically. Each tenant company should designate one staff member to collect cards on behalf of all its employees. Cards may be picked up at the management office (Suite 110) between 8:00 a.m. and 11:00 a.m. on weekdays only.

We apologize for the inconvenience. Building D’s garage is unaffected and will operate as usual.

To: All Halverson Logistics staff
From: Priya Anand, Office Coordinator
Subject: Action needed before March 9

Hi everyone,

You’ve probably seen the notice posted in the elevators about the garage closure. Since our office is in Building C, this affects all of us who drive in.

I’ll be the one collecting the temporary cards for our whole team, so please do not go to Suite 110 yourselves — they’ll only hand them to the designated person anyway. I plan to pick them up this Thursday morning. If you drive to work and will need a card, reply to this email by Wednesday at noon so I know how many to request.

One more thing: the management office is only open for card pickup in the mornings, so if you join the company after this week and need a card, let me know early and I’ll arrange it.

For those of you who take the train or work from home most days, you can ignore all of this.

Thanks,
Priya

A Quiet Café Bets on Slowing Down

When Dahlia Forsythe opened Meridian Roastworks in the Eastbrook district two years ago, she made a decision that puzzled her fellow café owners: she refused to install a wireless internet connection. “Everyone told me I was making a mistake,” she recalls. “The assumption is that people come to a café to work for hours over a single coffee.”

Forsythe wagered the opposite. She believed a growing number of customers were tired of cafés that felt like crowded offices, where every table is occupied by someone staring at a laptop. Her gamble was that, without internet, those laptop users would go elsewhere — and that this would actually be good for business.

Her reasoning was about table turnover. A customer working on a laptop might occupy a seat for three hours while buying one drink. A customer who comes simply to talk, read, or relax tends to stay forty minutes and is more likely to order food. “I wasn’t trying to be unfriendly to remote workers,” she says. “I was trying to build a different kind of room.”

The early months were difficult. Reviews online frequently complained about the lack of internet, and weekday mornings were sparse. But Forsythe held firm, and gradually a different crowd appeared: retirees meeting friends, parents with young children, people reading novels. Weekend afternoons, once her slowest period, became her busiest.

Other café owners in Eastbrook have taken notice. Two have since reduced the number of power outlets in their seating areas, and one has begun switching off its internet during peak weekend hours. None, however, have gone as far as Forsythe. “I’m not telling anyone else how to run their café,” she says. “But I’d encourage them to question the assumption that more amenities always mean more customers.”

Oh no. That’s probably the flooring contractor. They’re redoing Dock 2 this week, remember? I sent the schedule on Monday.

Renata Voss (9:45 a.m.)
I must have missed it. So Dock 2 is out of commission?

Jerome Pak (9:46 a.m.)
For today, yes. But Dock 4 on the north side is open. The driver can pull around the back of the building.

Renata Voss (9:47 a.m.)
The thing is, the van is carrying the refrigerated produce order. We can’t have it sitting out too long.

Subject: Update on the Riverside relocation

Dear Marcus,

I am writing to bring you up to date on the move to our new Riverside office. As you know, the lease on our current building expires at the end of May, so we have been working to ensure a smooth transition before then.

The good news is that the renovation of the third floor is now complete, and the new workstations were installed last week. However, the conference rooms on the second floor still require additional wiring for the video equipment, which the contractor estimates will take another ten days. For this reason, I recommend that we postpone the all-staff orientation tour, originally planned for March 20, until early April.

In the meantime, I would appreciate it if you could prepare a packing schedule for the marketing department. Please keep in mind that the IT team needs at least three business days to disconnect and transport the servers, so the schedule should account for that.

Let me know if you have any questions.

Subject: Re: Mock-ups for the spring catalogue

Dear Mr. Delvane,

Thank you for sending over the three cover concepts yesterday afternoon. The marketing team reviewed them this morning, and we agree that the second concept—the one with the folded-fabric photograph—captures the direction we discussed at our kick-off meeting.

There is, however, one adjustment we would like to request before we proceed. The product code that appears beneath each item in the sample spread is set in a typeface that is rather difficult to read against the darker backgrounds. Could the codes be enlarged slightly and shifted to a lighter band? Our customers rely on those codes when placing orders by phone, so legibility is essential.

I should mention that our printing vendor has moved its deadline forward by a week. To stay on schedule, we would need the revised files no later than 22 March. I realize this is tighter than originally planned, and if the timing is not workable, please let me know at once so we can discuss alternatives.

Harborview Community Recreation Center
Notice to Members — Summer Swim Program

Beginning 1 June, the center will run its annual learn-to-swim program in the main pool. Sessions are grouped by experience rather than by age, so adults and children may register for the same level. Each course runs for four weeks, with two lessons per week.

Spaces are limited and tend to fill quickly. Members who registered for any program last summer may sign up one day before general registration opens. To claim this early access, bring last year’s membership card to the front desk; online early registration is not available this year because of a system upgrade.

A reminder that the “Stroke Refinement” course assumes that participants can already swim one full length of the pool without stopping. Staff will conduct a brief check on the first day, and anyone not yet at that standard will be moved, without charge, to the level below.

Dear Ms. Forsythe,

Thank you for considering the Lakeview Pavilion for your company’s two-day leadership summit in May. Based on the details you provided — approximately 80 attendees, a need for catered lunches on both days, and audiovisual support for presentations — I have outlined our four meeting packages below.

Please note that the Summit and Premier packages include complimentary on-site parking for all attendees, which the smaller packages do not. Since you mentioned that most of your participants will be driving in from neighboring towns, this may be a deciding factor.

One clarification: our standard audiovisual support covers a projector and microphone, but live-streaming equipment is available only as a paid add-on (250 dollars per day), regardless of which package you select. Let me know if you require it.

Riverton’s Cargo-Bike Pilot Surprises Skeptics

When the Riverton city council approved a six-month trial of electric cargo bikes for downtown deliveries last autumn, few local business owners expected much. The bikes — bulky, three-wheeled machines capable of hauling up to 200 kilograms — looked impractical on streets long dominated by delivery vans.

Yet six months on, the results have quieted many critics. According to a report released by the Department of Urban Mobility, participating couriers completed deliveries within the central district an average of 14 minutes faster than van drivers, largely because the bikes could use bicycle lanes and park directly outside storefronts.

“I assumed it was a publicity stunt,” admitted Priya Anand, who owns a bookshop on Garrick Street. “But my morning shipments now arrive before opening, which never used to happen. I’ve stopped complaining.”

Not everyone is convinced the model can scale. Logistics analyst Tomas Reinholt cautions that the pilot covered only the compact downtown core. “Cargo bikes shine over short distances on flat terrain,” he noted. “Extend the radius to the hilly outer suburbs, and the time savings evaporate. The council should resist the temptation to treat this as a citywide solution.”

The council is expected to vote next month on whether to make the program permanent within the downtown zone. Notably, the proposal under discussion would not expand the bikes beyond that area — a detail that aligns with Reinholt’s reservations, even if he remains broadly cautious.

Renata Okoye (8:42 A.M.)
Hey Sam, quick one — the client just moved our product demo from Thursday to this afternoon at 3. Can the prototype be ready?

Sam Delgado (8:45 A.M.)
The software side is fine, but the casing came back from the printer with a cracked hinge. I flagged it yesterday.

Renata Okoye (8:46 A.M.)
Right, I saw your note but thought it was minor. How bad is it?

Sam Delgado (8:48 A.M.)
It won’t survive being opened and closed a few times in front of the client. We have two options: demo it sealed and just talk through the interior, or I rush a replacement hinge from the supplier on Oak Street.

Renata Okoye (8:50 A.M.)
How long would the replacement take?

Sam Delgado (8:51 A.M.)
If I leave now, I can be back and have it installed by 1. Tight but doable.

Hello,

I attended the photography talk you held last winter and enjoyed it very much, so I would like to take part in the upcoming smartphone photography session. I am not currently a member of the Center, though I am thinking of joining later this year.

I tried to call the front desk this morning but could not get through. Could you confirm by email that there is still a spot available for me? If so, please let me know the total amount I will need to pay, including any applicable charges, and how I should submit payment.

One more thing — I noticed that the bread baking session takes place in the Kitchen. Is parking available near that entrance? I may sign up for that one as well if my schedule allows.

Thank you,
Daniel Molina

Local Bookshop Finds New Life as a Gathering Spot

By Tara Whitfield, Staff Reporter

When Corner Page Books opened on Maple Street eleven years ago, owner Greta Halloran sold mainly used novels and the occasional greeting card. Today, the shop looks rather different. Half of the floor space is now occupied by a small café, and a back room hosts everything from poetry readings to children’s story hours.

“For a while, sales were slipping,” Ms. Halloran admitted. “People could buy the same books online for less. I realized I wasn’t really selling books anymore — I was selling a place to be.” Rather than competing on price, she decided to give customers reasons to stay.

The change did not happen overnight. Ms. Halloran spent nearly a year renovating the space and partnering with a neighboring bakery to supply pastries. She also began charging a modest membership fee that grants regulars discounts on coffee and early access to author events. To her surprise, more than two hundred people signed up in the first three months.

The strategy appears to be working. Foot traffic has roughly doubled, and book sales — far from disappearing — have actually risen, as visitors who come for the café often leave with a novel as well. Other independent shop owners in the area have taken notice, and at least two have asked Ms. Halloran for advice.

Still, she is cautious about expanding too quickly. “I get offers to open a second location almost every month,” she said. “But the whole point is that this place feels personal. I’d rather do one thing well than spread myself thin.”

To: Marisol Vendrell, Facilities Manager
From: Dev Patrana, Office Coordinator
Date: 14 March
Subject: Relocation of the third-floor break room

Dear Ms. Vendrell,

I am writing to follow up on our conversation last week about the renovation of the east wing. As you know, the third-floor break room will be closed for repairs starting Monday, 24 March. Because the renovation is expected to take roughly six weeks, the staff will need an alternative space during that period.

I have inspected the empty conference room on the second floor (Room 218) and believe it would serve well as a temporary break area. However, it currently lacks a refrigerator and a sink, both of which the staff rely on daily. Could your team install a portable refrigerator before the 24th? The sink is less critical, as a water dispenser is already available nearby.

One more thing: several employees have asked whether the vending machines from the old break room can be moved to Room 218 rather than left unused. I think this is a reasonable request, but I’ll defer to your judgment on whether relocating them is worth the effort for a temporary setup.

Please let me know if Room 218 works for you, or if you’d prefer to suggest a different location. I’d like to inform the staff by Friday so they have time to adjust.

Best regards,
Dev Patrana

Greenhollow Community Library — Service Update

Starting Saturday, 5 July, the library will launch a new self-checkout system at all three branches. The system allows members to borrow up to ten items without staff assistance. To use it, simply scan your membership card, then scan each item.

Please note the following during the transition:

• For the first two weeks, a volunteer will be stationed near each machine to help members unfamiliar with the process.
• The returns desk will continue to be staffed as usual; only checkouts are affected.
• Members with overdue fines must still settle them at the front desk, as the machines cannot process payments.

We expect shorter wait times once members grow comfortable with the new system. Questions may be directed to your branch coordinator.

Text message

Renata: Hey, did you go to the Westbrook branch today? I wanted to grab those cooking books before the weekend.

Tomas: I did. Heads up — they just put in those new self-checkout machines. I tried one but it wouldn’t let me check out.

Renata: Really? Was it broken?

Tomas: No, turns out I had a late fee from that history book I returned last month. The machine couldn’t take the payment, so I had to go to the desk anyway.

Renata: Ah, good to know. I’ll bring some cash just in case. Thanks!
